Fungi are a huge and fascinating kingdom with over 15,000 species in the UK! Fungi are not plants and don’t get their energy from the sun. They acquire their food by absorbing dissolved molecules. Mushrooms are the fruiting part of some fungi which come to the surface, with the rest of the root like system called the mycelium hidden.

Many fungi are easily damaged and increasingly rare. Take pictures but don’t touch – leave these fantastic fungi where they are for others to spot.

Please be aware that fungi can be deadly poisonous – don’t use this website to identify them for culinary use.
