Kersal Moor History
Kersal Moor has been used by humans going back to the Neolithic age. Kersal Moor is the oldest site in Salford that has been used continuously for sport, dating back to at least 1681, with horse racing taking place since 1687.
Richard Buxton, the famous Artisan Naturalist, published his botanical Guide to the plants within sixteen miles of Manchester in 1849. Kersal Moor was a favourite haunt of the local botanists mentioned by Buxton. This site continues in the spirit of Artisan Naturalists, cataloguing plants and flowers and learning more about our local wildlife.
In 1838, the Chartist movement drew up a plan: a six point chart designed to give the working man the vote and to design a just electoral system. This six point chart was announced to the public on the Moor.
